Thousands of users in the legal and financial communities rely daily on WORLDOX, World Software’s prize-winning document manager, to bring order out of chaos and prevent crucial documents from being mishandled, misplaced, or lost on today’s large-capacity networks. With WORLDOX, these users enjoy the full benefits of security, custom profiling of documents and e-mails, versioning, user management, archiving, full-text searching, and more—but without the complexity, outages, and added costs and support requirements of a SQL-based system. Users’ devotion is based not only on the extra reliability and ease of use they’ve come to associate with World Software products, but on the care and customization they get from World Software partners and World Software Technical Support.

WORLDOX scales easily, handling small offices and wide-area networks with equal aplomb. And WORLDOX/Web provides secure document access not just through the corporate intranet, but across the Internet as well.

Company mission

World Software’s philosophy is simple: Performance, No excuses. World Software is not only a technology provider but a solutions provider. As such it provides software and support with a problem-solving mindset. Document management must work to the customer’s advantage; anything that falls short of full usability is unacceptable. Each installation is unique because each customer’s data and requirements are unique. A good document management system functions smoothly in a changeable and demanding environment, integrating not only with one or more operating systems but with dozens of unrelated programs, from word processors and spreadsheets to backup and antivirus utilities. Regardless of who, what, or why, it all has to come together successfully.

A history of innovation and commitment

From the beginning, World Software Corporation has demonstrated a singular commitment to document management, pursuing its vision even as competitors have given up or changed directions.

That beginning dates to May 1988, when World Software was created around one of the more innovative concepts to enter the DOS utilities market. EXTEND-A-NAME, launched that year, liberated desktop computer users from the frustrating limits of MS-DOS’s eight-plus-three character file-naming restrictions. EXTEND-A-NAME users were the first to experience extended, fully descriptive long file names. Interestingly, Windows 95 implements its long file names using a technology similar to the one pioneered by EXTEND-A-NAME more than a decade ago.

Critical acclaim and market enthusiasm greeted the release in June 1989 of EXTEND-A-NAME Plus, now upgraded to a full file manager and further expanded to add networking. World Software had advanced from being the publisher of a well-received DOS utility program to become a player in the burgeoning field of file and document management. This status was confirmed in early 1991 with EXTEND-A-FILE, a full-featured Document Management System for MS:DOS. EXTEND-A-FILE introduced such signature document management features as fully customizable profiles, indexed text searching, version control, and time-and-billing cost recovery.

World Software’s vision of document management was further realized in 1992 by EXTEND-A-FILE Plus, which not only boosted the performance of indexed text searching by incorporating the ISYS Search Engine but introduced an expanded profiling engine, complete with profile groups. A full-fledged Enterprise Document Manager, EXTEND-A-FILE Plus enabled the different organizational units in a business to maintain custom-tailored control over all their electronic documents and other files.

Later that same year, World Software moved to Microsoft Windows with the announcement of WORLDOX, the Document Manager for Windows. The first version began shipping in July of 1993. Rewritten from the ground up in C++, the new program featured Inso (now: Stellent) Corporation’s now-famous “Outside/In” file viewer—the first legal document management system to incorporate this product.

Version 2.0 of WORLDOX, released in 1994, added another signature touch with the incorporation of ISYS, the award-winning, best-of-breed text search engine. World Software required ISYS to provide profile indexing as well as text indexing —a strategy that allows WORLDOX to use only a single search engine for both profiles and text, simplifying maintenance greatly. Our competitors, meanwhile, still require two search engines, SQL for profiles and Verity or Fulcrum for text.

The next advance, WORLDOX 96, came in 1996, and featured the latest version of ISYS, Version 4.0. In addition, its components were reconfigured under the covers to become more modular, preparing the way for a fully 32-bit program.

In 1998 World Software shipped WORLDOX 8.0, featuring Group Security, Domains for extensive support of wide area networks, and a 5,000-character Comments field for profiles. Upgrading was easy for existing customers, with many doing so overnight or over a single weekend.

Today, World Software continues to extend the boundaries of document management. WORLDOX has grown until it stands as a function-complete document management system with a built-in e-mail management system. WORLDOX’s status in the legal community is confirmed by a Law Office Computing Readers' Choice Award in the Document Management category and a Law Technology News Award for Document Management. In addition to the development of WORLDOX 2002, with all the improvements our customers have come to expect, our WORLDOX/Web add-on product has evolved to provide architecture for the building of portals and extranets. The upcoming release of WORLDOX 2004 represents a major step forward in terms of functionality and performance of the multi-award-winning document manager.
